when I moved, 2023.
felt - natural dye - weave - knit - embroider - lace - spin
I was 12. It was my first time moving cities, changing schools, and having to meet new people. I was terrified of the “new”. But when my mom, my stepfather, and I arrived, after a 10-hour drive, we went straight to the sea. It was a freezing cold winter night, but according to my mom, “we were enjoying the best thing the new place had to offer.” I didn’t know what was ahead of me. In the end, this new town turned out to be the most important place in my life so far. It is where I met my best friends, and the love of my life, and learned how to be myself. That first night was cold, but the memory of it is now warm.
I want to evoke the feeling I had when I moved.
The not knowing what will happen, the fear of the unknown, the process of learning from different people, and finding comfort in my community are translated in this piece.
Like it happened that night, I started the project with one goal: enjoy the best things a place has to offer. To live again these processes I challenged myself to learn how to create with new techniques, to explore the school’s facilities, to bond even further with my classmates, and to use only materials available in the yarn room. It was also important that in the beginning, I did not know what the outcome would be or how it was going to end.
This is my moving process. I wrote in my journal every day and each day I had a different emotion that came from a different experience. And although the time is linear, the learning process is not a straight line, but one full of ups and downs.
